This report is based on Atmosphere of Hope: Searching for Solutions to the Climate Crisis by Australian writer Tim Flannery. This translation project extracts chapters six, seven and eight as the translation materials whose topics are climate science and national climate policy as well as the state of coal and oil industries. The original text, with lots of names, places, national organizations and related professional expressions, passive sentences and long professional sentences and so on,presents informative and professional content.Based on the Skopos theory, the author first abstracts the linguistic features of the source text, and then finds the main translation purpose is to convey the original information clearly and accurately. This report mainly consists of five aspects: task description, description of translation process, text analysis of Atmosphere of Hope, cases study and conclusion. The author focuses on the cases study at the lexical and syntactical level, and explores the corresponding translation strategies under the guidance of the Skopos rule, coherence rule and faithfulness rule.At the lexical level, the author utilizes literal translation, amplification and word conversion strategies, preserving the original language style while taking target readers' feelings into account;at the syntactical level, the strategies of syntactic linearity, syntactic transformation and division and reconstruction are adopted to make translation conform to target readers' reading habits in target language context.By combining Skopos theory with practice, the author further verifies the feasibility and rationality of Skopos theory in this translation project.According to the translation purpose, the author sums up suitable translation methods for this kind of text, which can accurately convey the original information and consider the reading habits of target readers. And the author hopes that the summarized translation gains can be useful for the translation of similar texts.
