Application Of The Domestication And Foreignization Theory In Translation Practice Of Banchi

During my master degree studying,I translated the novel Banchi of Japanese Writer Sakaguchi Reiko.And this report is based on the translation practice of it,aiming to conclude my translation practice knowledge.Banchi won the Japanese Shincho company literary award in 1953.The story of Banchi take place at Wushe,which is well known by the Wushe Incident.It describes after the incident,the hero being suffering from the pain and inferiority complex from his bloodlines.The description of images of original inhabitants and special customs of Taiwan have become the important information of the research on the Taiwan under the ruling of Japan colonial government.But in the meanwhile,they are also the most difficult part among the translation.In order to settle these difficulties,I learned the domestication and foreignization theory,and it's core idea that to choose translation strategy out of source text and target text has being much helpful in problem solving.My report is written under the domestication and foreignization theory of Venuti.He emphasis the presence of source culture.About the theory,there are already bunches of studies which are regard of it's content and application.However,most of them are about it's advantages and disavantages,as for how to complete such disavantages,it haven't been discussed.In my report,I analyse the the strategies that I've taken and the effective of them from three aspects:term,the context that reflects the discrimination of different social groups and the contest reflects social culture background through specific examples.With my analyse and practice,I solved the problem that ? met while translating the text,and moreover,? also tried to do some thinking over the theory.My report is composed by three parts as followed.At first chapter,I started with the translation studies.I looked back the brief history of translation studies' development,and introduced the position of domestication and foreignization in the translation studies.Then,I introduced the domestication and foreignization theory of Venuti I used.It is under the background that English countries have been developed prosperously,the main trend of translation is being turning into domestication,with that change,the translation can go easily to self-nationalism of culture.So,Venuti put forward foreignization,and opposed against the fluent,natural translation.And at last,the theory can be well used at the translation of Banchi by giving the specific examples.In the second chapter,I analyzed how I used the theory from three aspects.First,the term.In Banchi,besides name of people and places,there are still many term,such as,"ri han ka","jyunsha".Those are used in history and no longer been used in nowadays,therefore,they are unfamiliar to the reader.So,under the Venuti' s theory,the unfamiliarity can be used to express the unique source culture by literal translation and other methods.Second,the hidden cultural background.When Taiwan was under the ruling of Japan colonial government,the Japanese authority has put forward many polices,and also tried to push the cultural infiltration,for example,they pushed the development of Japanese education.In the novel,there are many context that reflect Japanese culture and polices during the war.I checked the background to present the special cultural and time ingredients,using the theory to translate.Third,the words and sentences that reflect the differences of people' s identity.In the novel,there are Japanese,original inhabitants,and the mixed blood of the both,and during the war,there are unequal treatment towards them.And these factors have been hidden in many dialogues and figure description.I think that it ' s important to understand this background,and it should be presented accurately in the translation.At the last chapter,I discussed the methods to realize foreignization,and reconsider domestication,and summarized the rules of application of the theory.Venuti ' s theory highlight the the importance of presence of source culture.And based on those studies and my translation practice,I tried to discuss the methods of realizing foreignization through examples.And reconsider domestication which has been considered as the opposite side of foreignization,and came to conclude that there is a chance that we can realize foreignization by domestication.At last,the rule of it' s application.When it come to linguistic translation,we usually use domestication,while cultural translation,foreignization is more suitable.And we should try to present the source culture in translation,without sacrificing the fluency.In this report,I solved the problems,and finished the translation under the construction of Venuti ' s theory.Finally,I summarized the difficulties,and back to the background of the theory,thinking over the the application of the theory in new age.I hope that this would be little contribution to the development of the theory.
