Horizon Of Expectation In Novel Translation

According to the concept of horizon of expectation,proposed by Hans Robert Jauss in his reception theory,the writer organizes his work by evoking and gradually destroying the readers' horizons of expectation in order to achieve its aesthetic effect.Similarly,horizon of expectation is instrumental in literature translation,especially in novel translation.From the perspective of horizon of expectation,the present thesis attempts to explore the readability and aesthetic reproduction in novel translation based on the E-C translation of My Absolute Darling.In the excerpts of My Absolute Darling as presented in this thesis,taboos and professional terms of guns are inevitably involved,and the excerpts are distinctive in characterization,genre and culture.Hence,improving the readability and reproducing the aesthetic effect in the target text have become main difficulties in the translation process,and these problems can be tackled under the guidance of horizon of expectation.The present thesis focuses on the following two aspects,i.e.,evoking and destroying the target readers'horizons of expectation,and discusses the strategies and methods of improving readability and reproducing aes??thetic effect in translation practice.In evoking the target readers' horizons of expectation,it is suggested that domestication be taken as the main strategy,and methods such as amplification,adaptation,annotation be adopted to improve the readability of the target text.In destroying the target readers' horizons of expectation,it is recommended that foreignization be taken as the main strategy,methods such as amplification,adaptation and conversion be used,as well as commendatory sense and derogatory sense of words being foregrounded in order to better reproduce the aesthetic effect.In the process of novel translation,the translator can analyze the target readers,horizons of expectation,and adopt appropriate translation strategies and methods to improve the target text's readability and reproduce the aesthetic effect.
