President Xi Jinping's state visit to the UK in 2015 is the first state visit by a Chinese head of state to the UK in 10 years, and the first state visit by China's top leader to the UK since the establishment of the new Chinese leadership, which is of great significance to the China-UK relations.By analyzing some of the activities arranged for President Xi's state visit to the UK and exploring the details during the visit from Stuart Hall's theory of representation, this thesis aims to illustrate that culture is an important medium by which China and the UK represent the “golden era” of China-UK relations to the world.Besides introduction and conclusion, the body of this thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter, starting from the British perspective, interprets that Britain represents its sincerity of being China's best partner in the west through a series of cultural signs like 103-gun salute,“Chinese Red”,the Confucius Institute and the UK Huawei. The second chapter, starting from the perspective of China,is designed to analyse that China, fully aware of Britain's sincerity, represents its goodwill of establishing a community of shared interests with the UK through a series of cultural signs like “royal/British blue”,meeting with leader of British Labour Party and pub visit with Cameron. The third chapter, starting from the cultural interaction between China and Britain, analyzes the cooperation and interaction in different cultural aspects between the two countries can not only enrich Chinese and British cultural connotations, also provide strong impetus for economic cooperation and bilateral relations between the two countries, which is an epitome of win-win China-UK relations. In the end, through the cultural representation and interaction,China and Britain represent the “golden era” of China-UK relations to the world.
