Taking the translation of Psychology for Teachers as a case, which will be published by East C hina Normal University Press, this report will explore the guidance role of the cohesion theory in this translation program. The cohesion theory was proposed by Halliday and Hasan in Cohesion in English.According to this book, the interpretation of some elements depends on that of other elements in the same discourse, and this dependent relationship is called cohesion. Thus, with cohesion the text can be an integrated one and easily understood.Cohesion falls into two categories: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. The former can be further divided into reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunction, while the latter can be split into repetition,synonymy/antonym,superordinate/hyponym and collocation. This thesis aims to discuss the guiding role of cohesion theory for the translation program – Psychology for Teachers. As a social science text, this book includes both theories and case analysis. The author first makes a n in-depth analysis of its logic and means of cohesion, with focus on the cohesive words and which type of cohesion they belong to.Taking E-C cohesive differences into consideration, the author then adopts the following translation methods: reiteration, omission, and transformation to deal with various means of cohesion in source text including reference, substitution and conjunction etc.so as to make the translation completely expressed, closely linked, and easily understood.
