A Report On The Relationship Between Logical Reasoning And Translation Competence

According to the translation competence composing mode proposed by PACTE study group,this thesis is designed to explore the underlying relationship between translation competence and logical reasoning by experiment research.Thirty students,who are from China University of Petroleum(Beijing)and majoring in MTI(English),are randomly selected as the subjects of this experiment.Before the experiment,the subjects were divided into two groups on the basis of whether they have training experience in logical reasoning or not,with fifteen students in each group.Students with such experience are included in Group A and Group B have no logical reasoning training experience.The experiment process is as follows:at first,the logical reasoning ability of the subjects is subject to the method of Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices(SPM);then the translation ability of the subjects is tested by translating an English text,which is moderately difficult;at last,the experiment data is collected by EXCEL software and analyzed with the help of the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient(PPMCC)calculation equations.Under the condition of controlled factors,the final results of the study indicate that:First,there is a positive correlation between logical reasoning and translation competence in general and r=0.761.Second,there is a moderate correlation between logical reasoning and text meaning,and r=0.631.Third,there is a low correlation between logical reasoning and grammar of translated text,and r=0.260.Fourth,there is a moderate correlation between logical reasoning and idiomaticity of translated text,and r=0.559.In view of these results,it can be concluded that there is a positive correlation between logical reasoning and translation competence,which means if a translator acquires stronger logical reasoning ability,his/her translation competence should be relatively greater.This thesis has verified previous theory and experience with the support of objective data.
