Difficulties And Tactics In E-C Simultaneous Interpreting

This report aims at concluding major difficulties and possible coping tactics in simultaneous interpreting through a case analysis on a whispered simultaneous interpreting task.The task was completed by the author on June 16 th,2016 when delegates from Coventry University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies held a meeting for a study program that will be established by the two universities together.After the case analysis,five difficulties are concluded as follows: attention management,syntactical differences,speech with ambiguous structure,cultural noise and interruption.First,the author spent too much time on production,increasing risks of missing the coming messages.Second,different positions of modifiers force the interpreters to pay more attention to processing and production.Third,when the logic of original message is poor,interpreters become more stressed as they need to re-organize and translate the speech simultaneously.Furthermore,cultural noise brings misinterpretation among audience,making communication ineffective.Interruption,on the other hand,happens frequently during discussion meetings.Four possible coping tactics are provided in this thesis: stalling,chunking,explanation and anticipation.Stalling is useful for dealing with poor structure,while chunking can be applied to cut English sentences into shorter units and make translation more familiar to Chinese audience.Proper explanation of notions in different countries could reduce cultural noise.Moreover,anticipation helps interpreters reduce their pressure of listening and comprehension as they have basic ideas about what the speaker is going to say.
