Studies On Translation Of Metaphorical Verbs

Both culture and society have a close bearings with language.Language mirrors local culture and enriches itself as well as social growth.Metaphor,as an indispensable part of language,can reflect kind of human thoughts and cognition with culture traits.Metaphors research,thus,matters much to society and culture studies.In the analysis of this translation project,the author finds that verb metaphors can act as a finishing touch or enhance the whole sentence.Nevertheless,it seems that most current related studies focus on noun metaphors rather than verb metaphors,which indeed demands our attention.Marrying metaphors theories with the translation practice of Research on American Society and Culture,the thesis aims to distinguish Source Domain and Target Domain in verb metaphor with "metaphor thoughts" and "metaphors mapping" provided by western scholars and conclude the function of verb metaphors,and then apply the above principle into the translation of verb metaphors,thus enhancing its theory foundation.While practicing this translation project,the author centres on the vehicle and sums up the following principles applicable for verb metaphors:1.Maintain the vehicle's image feature.Image coexists with metaphor.2.Grab the correlation between two different kinds of cultural connotation.Since verb metaphors bear culture,the translation of it is inevitably embraces cultural similarities and dissimilarities.Seize the common points or similarities for they resonate with both Target Domain readers and Source Domain readers.3.Fill the cultural vehicle gap.The world is consisted of all nations.Every nation has its individualities along with universals.Thus,understandably,there are lots of unique expressions that are unique to English-speaking America while lacking in Chinese culture.Considering this situation,translators need,according to the context,to reincarnate the original meaning.Maintaining principle needs appropriate use of methods.After summarizing the verb metaphor translation principles,the author concludes three verb metaphor translation methods:maintaining the image to keep both spirit and appearance,switching image to be expressive,and paraphrasing to be faithful in meaning.To bridge the different cultures' gap and convey the metaphor successfully,it is advisable that translators observe the above three principles and apply the three translation methods flexibly.
