A Practice Report On The Translation Of Aircraft Maintenance Manual

With the quick pace of industrialization of China,more and more enterprises are seeking innovation while introducing advanced technology and products abroad to improve their marketing competitiveness.In this process,translation is the vital bridge of communication,especially scientific and technical translation such as equipment installation manual and maintenance manual which play an important role in the usage of imported equipment.Although related experts abroad give guidance in operation,the translation version is also necessary.Because of its features and differences between language cultures of countries,scientific and technical translation is different from other translation in features,which is also an obstacle for translation researchers home and abroad.The translation principles-faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance can not be fully shown and obeyed in scientific and technical translation.Therefore,translation principles and standards need to be chosen for such kind of translation.But the translation still needs some strategies.This report is related to a translation project for Aircraft Maintenance Manual for aircraft A330 which contains 10,546 words and takes 11 days(average 1000 words per day)to be finished by author independently.It demonstrates the background and reason of translation program and the translation process including pre-translation such as study on site,searching related information,in-translation such as computer aided translation and proofreading of translation.Through the case analysis on Aircraft Maintenance Manual,the report studies the features of scientific and technical translation in aspects of vocabulary and sentence,and tries to propose translation methods or skills for it.The report shows that in the process of this kind of translation,the translator having overall understandings of the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communication,requires to balance the comprehensive factors including the aspects of translation program,target readers,translation function and aim,expression of source language and the acceptance of target language,to give advice to translating scientific and technical texts.
