Undergoing rapid development in recent years, the Chinese universities have been facing the corruption problems in various important fields and critical aspects of university operations, which lead to negative social impact on the reputation of these institutions. The discipline inspectors and supervisors, who are working at the front line of the anti-corruption campaigns, meet great challenges. To address this issue, the psychological stress and the coping process of the discipline inspectors and supervisors are studied,in order to provide insight to the development of their physical and mental health. The questionnaire survey method and the interview method are applied to the discipline inspectors and supervisors to investigate their psychological stress issues.First,a nation-wide investigation involving 288 discipline inspectors and supervisors was carried out by using the Psycho-Somatic-Tension-Relaxation Inventory(or PSTRI).Based on the quantitative analysis of the questionnaire data, four discipline inspectors and supervisors are chosen from several universities in Beijing for in-depth interviews. The study shows that:(1)The self-perceived stress level of the discipline inspectors and supervisors of the universities is relatively high, with the pressure of the work as the main source of stress;meanwhile, the self-perceived stress level of the research subjects varies with demographical factors including sex, age, education, working seniority, and administrative ranking with significant differences.(2)The obtained stress score has statistical significance on the education variable;other variables such as education,self-perceived stress, and self-perceived stressor accounts for the overall stress scores well.(3)The psychological stressors includes the social factors(bureaucratic limitations, social environment),the work factors(working content, working characteristics,human-resource management),and the personal factors(personal experience, career development, work role characteristics).(4)A stress coping model for the discipline inspectors and supervisors of the universities is proposed in this thesis: the cognitive assessment of the stress is the foundation of the coping;the individual inclination, the social support, the working experience and capability, and the coping attitude are the medium of the coping. The interaction and interplay among the cognitive assessment, the individual inclination, the social support, the working experience and capability, and the coping attitude determine the coping strategy and the coping result for each individual at last. The self-perceived stress level and the measured stress level of the discipline inspectors and supervisors of the universities are unoptimistic. The psychological stressors include the social factors, the work factors, and the personal factors. The coping model proposed in this work summarizes the coping process of the discipline inspectors and supervisors, and illustrates the interactions among all the elements of coping process.
