This thesis is a report on the translation of the first, second, third and sixth chapter of the Folk Customs of Mongol Nationality. The ten thousand words of material includes several themes, such as the Greeting of the Mongol Nationality, the etiquette of visiting Mongol ger,the traditional festivals of Mongolians and the songs and dances of Mongolian people, covering various aspects of the life, art and folk customs of Mongol nationality. The feature of the source text is brief in language and vivid in wording. This translation would not only make readers of both home and abroad directly acknowledge and understand the basic folk customs in Mongolian's life, but also help the traditional Mongolian culture be more widely accepted around the world.A distinct feature of the original text is the frequently recurring culture-specific items which are also the most difficult point of this translation project. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is the analysis of the translation methods of different kinds of Mongolian culture-specific item. The definition and the previous studies of culture-specific items both home and abroad are given in the Introduction. The quantitative analysis of the text shows that there are about 130 culture-specific items in the original text. The author categorizes them, based on the classification methods proposed by Nida and Aixela, into five kinds: ecological culture-specific items, material culture-specific items, religious culture-specific items, social culture-specific items and Mongolian pronunciation-adapted culture-specific items. The translation principles of this translation project, the “Three Adherence Principles” of international translation, are elaborated as well in the chapter two. These culture-specific items can be translated by the methods of transliteration, paraphrase, imitation, omission, addition and synonym. In conclusion, the “Three Adherence Principles” of international translation is of great guiding significance in the translation of tourism materials. The translation of culture-specific items should be smooth and natural in language, effective in the communication between twolanguages and accurate in the delivery of the cultural connotations. This thesis mainly discusses the translation of culture-specific items in the hope that the English translation could convey the content of the original text more precisely thus helping the receivers of the target language to understand and appreciate the Mongolian folk customs more accurately.
