A Report On The Translation Of The Petroleum Engineering Handbook: Sustainable Operations (Excerpts)

Recently,with the acceleration of economic globalization,the translation of scientific and technical literature,especially English of petroleum engineering,has attracted the attention of an increasing number of people.English of petroleum engineering,which belongs to a branch of English for Science and Technology(EST),is also a kind of English for Specific Purpose(ESP).This practice is a report on the translation of an excerpted chapter from the book The Petroleum Engineering Handbook: Sustainable Operations.The selected chapter is about the exploration operations of petroleum engineering,which mainly elaborates on current practices of exploration operations,corresponding exploration techniques adopted,problems with current exploration techniques,and how current practices of explorations can be conducted environmentally acceptable.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology,the author completed the translation project with the application of different translation strategies and skills.The translation project mainly contains four parts,namely,task description,process description,case analysis and conclusion.The first part is a brief analysis and introduction of the source text,and a discussion of the objectives and significance of the project.The second part consists of preparations before translation,translation process,and the proofreading and modification of the target text.In the third part,the author analyzes the translating of terminologies,long and complex sentences and passive sentences under the guidance of text typology,and also illustrates the corresponding strategies.The last part is about the experience the author obtains from the translation process,and it is expected to be helpful to other translators' practice.
