In the 21stcentury,the development of construction industry and real estate industry stimulates the prosperity of English for Specific Purposes, which is a variety of English used specifically in a particular field and mainly conveys the information and professional knowledge in this field. As a branch of English for Specific Purposes, civil engineering English is mainly used in the field of construction industry. For Chinese engineers, technicians and construction workers, the mastery of this English variety is an essential capability which makes them become internationalized and skilled talents, and helps them succeed in the projects.Accordingly, the understanding and study of the communicative civil engineering English is of vital significance. The research of English for Specific Purposes in western countries could be traced back to the 1960s,and some mature theories like register analysis, stylistics and terminology have been created.E-C translation of civil engineering has been studied from different perspectives, such as theme/rheme and thematic progression study, stylistic analysis perspective study, functional stylistics study, functionalism approach study and so on.However, when it comes to E-C translation of civil engineering English, few researches have dealt with this issue from the perspective of Text Typology Theory, let along in-depth researches. In this thesis, the author finds that the theory of text typology and text functions can be applied to the analysis of E-C translation of technical texts in civil engineering and their translation. The first chapter of this thesis briefly introduces the research background and the questions to be answered in the study of E-C translation of technical texts in civil engineering.Chapter two discusses the definition of technical texts and technical texts in civil engineering, and reviews the studies about technical texts in civil engineering from different perspectives and based on different theories.Chapter three analyzes the linguistic features of English technical texts in civil engineering.Chapter four introduces the early views and development of text type theory and Newmark's text type theory in particular. Then the author probes into the differences and similarities between Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation methods and discusses the criteria of E-C translation of engineering English. In Chapter five, based on Newmark's Text Typology Theory, the author exemplifies the E-C translation of technical texts in civil engineering at lexical level, syntactic and textual level respectively. The technical text as a typical informative text, its main function is to convey the objective engineering information to the Chinese engineers, architectural designers, technicians and construction workers. As Newmark points out, communicative translation is applicable for informative text.Based on the analysis under the guidance of Newmark's Text Typology Theory, the author draws a conclusion that communicative translation is preferred in the E-C translation of technical texts in civil engineering.
