This is a report on the Chinese-English Translation of The Technical Proposal for the Operation and Maintenance of A-B Standard Gauge Railway in Country C.The translation material is selected from Section Three ?Project Management Plan? of the Technical Proposal.The author is part of the effort to translate the Technical Proposal from Chinese to English.Through the analysis of some representative examples,the author illustrates the guidance function of J.C.Catford‘s translation shift theory in the translation of contract.The translated text belongs to the contract documents,which is the official text.And it is concise with many terminologies.The sentence structure is not complex,and subjectless and passive sentences are used frequently.Section three ?Project Management Plan? consists of 13 sub-clauses,and introduces the whole 17 departments,their responsibilities,the Management and Schemes,the Recruitment of Operator's Personnel,Management of Employees,Financial Management and some other detailed issues.In this section,the detailed management issues are stated,and the operators are supposed to manage the railway project in accordance with this section.Based on Catford‘s translation shift theory,this report analyzes the application of the theory in ?Project Management Plan? in the aspects of level shift and category shift respectively.This theory deserves a further study for it has great significance on the translation of contract documents.Through the translation project,the author gains a deeper understanding of the characteristics and translation of contract documents.Also,the author acquires some practical experience in translation practice,which is under the guidance of translation theories.The author hopes that this report can provide some references for C-E translation of relevant texts.
