The Ancient Quarrel Between Poetry And Philosophy—the Interpretation Of Republic

Since the birth of philosophy,the ancient Greek tradition of poetry has been attacked by philosophers,and the poets have criticized and ridiculed philosophers.The final formation of the two different modes of thinking,which caused the dispute between poetry and philosophy.In this historical context,Plato criticized and expelled poetry and poets in Republic.Therefore,the main purpose of the author is to review the criticism against poetry in Republic,to explore Plato's attitude towards poetry,and to illustrate the essence of the dispute between poetry and philosophy.First,the structure and main topic of Republic are discussed in this thesis.Then,analyses are made on the topic “the controversy between philosophy and poetry and the reason” which is put forward by Plato in Republic.Philosophers and poets have argued fiercely about the leadership of the city's education and the possession of the truth.It is on this basis that Plato examines and criticizes poetry from the perspectives of enlightenment and truth.Plato's criticism of poetry and poets is obvious,and because of this,most people always ignore Plato's defense of poetry in the end.The last chapter is about Plato's defense of poetry and the complex relationship between poetry and philosophy.
