With a history of less than 50 years,Chinese Canadian literature in English attracts more and more attention of scholars at home and abroad. The importance of Chinese Canadian literature in English lies not only in the development history of Chinese Canadians but also in its unique social circumstance, distinctive individual characters and comprehensive artistic forms. The source text is a novel, which is written by a newly emerged talent Chinese Canadian woman writer Larissa Lai.It is shortlisted for the James Tiptree Jr.Award, the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic and the City of Calgary W.O.Mitchell Book Prize. And there is no Chinese version of the book published in mainland China up to now.Under the guidance of Manipulation Theory, the translator conducts English-Chinese translation of Salt Fish Girl and completes corresponding translation report, which is divided into five parts.Chapter One describes the translation task, including the background information, translation process and significance and objective of the translation task.Chapter Two analyzes the features of Salt Fish Girl.Firstly, taking the language of the novel into account,it looks like a prose and fulls of poetic descriptions.Secondly, the writing style of this novel adopts magic realism, combining Chinese mythology with scientific imagination.Lastly, the novel searches for the cultural identity of Chinese Canadians, which is the common theme of contemporary Chinese Canadian writers.Chapter Three introduces Manipulation Theory, put forward by André Lefevere, who is a Belgian scholar, and discusses translation strategies from the angles of poetics, patronage and ideology, which are the three elements that manipulate literary translation.Chapter Four is the core part of this paper--case analysis. In this chapter, numerous examples are selected to elaborate the translation strategies adopted by the translator at both lexical and syntactical level. The main translation strategies are making the target text readable, reappearing the writing style of the source text and restoring the traditional Chinese culture in the translated text.Chapter Five is the conclusion part, concluding the contributions and shortcomings of this paper.Through the translating experience of the translator, this translation report provides detailed translation methods for Chinese Canadian literature and hopes to provide somevaluable reference for other scholars at the same time.
