The Study On The Relationship Between India And Israel(1947-2014)

The Southern Asia and Middle East regions play a decisive role in the contemporary international relationships,of which India and Israel are one of the most representative countries in both regions.Since the independence of India in August,1947,the development of India's relationship with the Middle Eastern countries has been full of twists and uncertainties.Both India and the Middle Eastern countries have their own diplomatic characteristics.As such,the research on the bilateral relationships between India and Israel is of great significance.This paper is organized around the relationship developing timeline.In accordance with the evolving historical events,this paper further analyzes the performance of the bilateral relationships between India and Israel at different stages.Based on the major historical events between the two countries,this paper then explores factors which could exert influences on the development of the bilateral relationships.This paper comprises of five parts which also constitute the three relationship development phases India and Israel have gone through: Cold Period(1947-1964),Deteriorating Period(1964-1984),Prelude of Normalization(1984-2014).In the Cold Period,Nehru maintained the diplomatic policy to the Middle East set up by Gandhi.Under the pressures of the Arab world and Pakistan,India admitted Israel's founding in 1950,but combated Israel to join the United Nations,refused to attend the Bandung Conference gave firm support to Egypt in the Suez Canal crisis,condemned the Israel's aggression at the same time.After the war between India and China In 1962,India began to seek Israel's military aid In the face of the failure of the military and the Egypt's betrayal.In this period,the normalization of India and Israel's relationship was set aside.Although the door was not fully open,India and Israel still had talks in certain areas of the bilateral relationship.Since Indira Gandhi took office,the relationship between two countries further cooled down.Between the 1960 s and the 1980 s,India kept its proclivity towards the Arabian countries and became increasingly aggressive to Israel.However,this policy did not receive a satisfied response from the Arabian countries.In the India-Pakistan war in 1971,the Arab and Islamic countries chose to support Pakistan,even so,India expressed understanding to the attitude of the Arab countries,Egypt and Syria were provided with a certain amount of medical assistance from India.As the Cold War approached to an end,the international environment also changed dramatically.Driven by the need to strengthen economic reforms,deepen defensive cooperation,combat against the Islamic extremists and facilitate geostrategic interests,India and Israel thus established formal diplomatic relationships and began to work together in various areas.There also exist many constraining factors within the bilateral relationships.The middle east political turmoil and the slowly reconciliation between Arab and Israel lead to the risk between India and Israel development.In economic aspect,India is in favor of Arab countries because of its Economic dependence of west Asia.In thought aspect,the criticism of establishing normal relations with Israel greatly came from whom were shocked by the end of the cold war and the fall of the Soviet union.They live for decades in the framework of anti-imperialist and can't adapt to the new reality.India has recognized and acknowledged the possibility of establishing normal relations with Israel,at the same time,it didn't give up the support to the Palestinians.In spite of this,the demand of cooperation between India and Israel is very strong and it will not diminish in a short period of time,so the strategic cooperation between the two countries will not change.
