A Study On Process Of Ethiopia And Israel Relationship

“Relations between Ethiopia and Israel” not only occupies an important position in the development of the two countries,but also has an important impact on the political process in the Middle East and the regional situation in the horn of Africa.Due to the complexity of the two countries' geographical location,domestic and foreign environment,national policies,historical emotions and so on,the relationship between the two countries in the process of exchanges is also complicated.Since the establishment of relations between Israel and Ethiopia,the development of Ethiopia-Israel relations can be divided into four stages: the gradual establishment relations(1948-1972),the beginning of relations to break up(1973-1989),the gradual restoration of relations(1989-1998),and the comprehensive restoration of relations(1998-2018).In the 1950 s and 1960 s,the development of Ethiopia-Israel relations was the result of mutual choices,and Israel was the leader.It wasn't until the 1950 s that Ethiopia really established ties with Israel.During this period,the exchanges between the two sides focused on Israel's assistance to Ethiopia,and Israel sent its dominant experts to Ethiopia in various areas,such as fishery,public transport,medical treatment,academic affairs and so on.Meanwhile,Ethiopia sent students to Israel to study.In the 1960 s,Ethiopia,was terrified by Eritrea's rebellion and Somalia independence,and Ethiopia sought military assistance from Israel in the context of internal.This initiative has further deepened relations between the two countries.In 1973,the Yom Kippur War opened the valve for the breakdown of the relationship between Ethiopia and Israel.Haile Selassie announced the severing of relations with Israel,the internal political situation in Ethiopia began to unrest,andthe Derg regime quickly overthrew Haile Selassie.During the Derg regime,the Eritrean rebellion made the Ethiopia authorities miserable,and in order to strengthen their regime,the Derg regime sought Israeli assistance.Israel,let bygones be bygones,provided technical,military and other assistance to Ethiopia.During this period,the two countries also maintained less trade ties.In 197,Mengistu overthrew the rule of Derg regime,ousted the United States technicians in its country,and after establishing comprehensive relations with the Soviet Union,Mengistu cut off relations with Israel.However,Israel has also been in negotiations with the political situation in Ethiopia for the safety and survival of the Black Jewish community in Ethiopian territory,in the hope of immigrating this part of the Jewish population to Israel.During this period,the existence of Black Jews became the only link between Israel and Ethiopia.From the Mengistu regime came to power to the late of 1980 s,Mengistu devoted himself to establishing comprehensive diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union while neglecting to establish relations with other countries.After the collapse of Gorbachev's reform,the Soviet Union withdrew its technicians and military personnel from Ethiopia.and the Mengistu regime faltered,helpless to seek assistance from Israel.The existence of the Black Jewish problem in Ethiopia gave Mengistu the leverage to bargain with Israel,and Israel didn't want to lose its early Allies,so recovering relations with Ethiopia in November 1989.After the collapse of the Mengistu government,the new government of Ethiopia also aspired to establish relations with Israel and to conduct high-level visits,and the relations between Ethiopia and Israel were gradually normalization.Israel's relations with Ethiopia entered a overall recovery in the late 1990 s and early 2000 s.During this period,political it was stability,democracy it deepened,economically it developed well,and meanwhile rich oil and water resources were also found in Ethiopia.With Ethiopia's economy booming in recent years and many countries building ties with it,Israel naturally can't turn a blind eye to its early Allies.Since the 1990 s,Ethiopia and Israel have maintained a balanced and friendly relationship.The discussion on the evolution of Ethiopia-Israel relations in the past 70 years,the status and influencing factors of each stage of the evolution,and the influence of this evolution on the two sides will not only enrich the academic research results on the relationship between Ethiopia and Israel;It will be more conducive to tracing the diplomatic trend of Egypt and Israel over the past 70 years from the perspective of historical evolution,and provide reference for understanding the future foreign policy trend of Ethiopia and Israel.
