Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi is translated by CHEN Shoupeng, the translator in the late Qing Dynasty, according to The China sea directory, which was published by United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in 1894. This study is mainly using methods of historical geography, regarding Coastal Areas of Guangdong Province as the center, to explore Coastal Defence Geography historical value of Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi.The China sea directory is a series of books published by UK Hydrographic Office. There were five versions in total, each one with four volumes. The third volume of the third edition, i.e. the 1894 version, in a lucky coincidence was encountered by CHEN shoupeng. For the purpose of saving the country and strengthening the army, CHEN compiled a unique book named Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi. The first chapter of my thesis discusses the original English version, the purpose of translation, and the content and features of Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi.Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi, not only can demonstrate and supplement historical facts in other maps and documents in Qing Dynasty, but also fill blanks that other maps and documents leave. The second chapter of this thesis discusses the significance of Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi in researching about the coastal defence geography of Guangdong, by comparing it with other maps and documents in Qing Dynasty.Although Xin yi zhong guo jiang hai xian yao tu zhi enjoys a reputation of rich content and accurate data, it is not perfect due to the time of its birth and the translator's limitations, which is illustrated in the fourth chapter of this thesis.
