In the theoretical system of historical materialism constructed by Marx, the concept of civil society plays a fundamental supporting role, and it was buried in the text of different periods as an important clue to its ideological evolutionand sublimation.Through the retrospection of the historical origins of the concept of civil society and the disentangled of the relevant clues in the early literature of Marx, this article reveals the real thoughts of the evolution of the meanings of it.Through the study,it was found that Marx applied the concept of civil society in two different stages. From the Criticism on Hegel's Legal Philosophy to the period of Paris Manuscripts,it is in this period that Marx' s civil society has established and developed.By resorting the criticism of legal philosophy and criticism of political economy,Marx laid the philosophical principle of civil society to the political state in this period.Meanwhile,he revealed the alienation essenceof civil society under the capitalist system, and formulated the active sublation of the private property, which means the realization of Communism.Civil society represents bourgeois societyin this period of time. From the German Ideology to the Communist Manifesto, this period is the turning point of Marx's civil society concept.During this time,Marx put the political economic dissection of capitalist society as the key to all of the social forms, which summed up the three principles of historical materialism. It demonstrated that the capitalist society will go to end,and the communist society will inevitably be established and developed. In this period,Marx's concept of civil society has changed from the reference to capitalist society to the totality of material relations, which also called the economic base. The completion of this change also marks the historical materialism established.
