The Sino-Vietnamese alliance built in 1950,and Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh characterized the Chinese and Vietnamese communists as “comrades plus brothers.” China made a significant financial contribution to the Vietnamese communists' war efforts, against first the French and then the Americans, the unification of Vietnam cannot come true without Chinese generous aid. This is a particularly new phenomenon of international relations that the Sino-Vietnamese did not remain cohesive but terminated in the war.The Sino-Vietnamese alliance built on the basis of anti the threat of America. In the process of the 2nd Indochina War,the Sino-Vietnamese alliance terminated. Why did the Sino-Vietnamese alliance terminate given the war which was in its stage of the most bloodiness? This dissertation will be in the onset of the theory of alliance to answer why the Sino-Vietnamese alliance terminated. From the logic of alliance maintenance, previous research on alliance maintenance mainly emphasized factors of material but the match of intentions. We know from the history of the Sino-Vietnamese alliance that the acceptability to the status in the international system has a great role on the termination of the alliance. On the three periods of the Sino-Vietnamese alliance, the alliance remain cohesive in 1950 s when China's power is relatively strong and Vietnam favored Chinese status of international system. In 1960 s,Chinese power is relatively descend, but the regime of the North Vietnam agreed the status of Chinese in system highly, this period of the Sino-Vietnamese alliance remained most cohesive. When the 2nd Indochina War broke up,the Sino-Vietnamese alliance terminated because of the conflicted legitimacy of international system given Chinese generous military aid to Vietnam.
