Before World War ?,American Chinese from Guangdong province played a dominant role in the society of American Chinese and overseas Chinese.Traditional overseas Chinese groups from Guangdong province also took the most important part in the community of Chinese American and served as a bridge to facilitate the communication between Chinese compatriots in America and American mainstream society and China.After the War,with the changes of international situation,America abolished Chinese Exclusion Act and China abandoned the system of dual nationality.Against the backdrop,the society of Chinese American and overseas Chinese has changed where Chinese compatriots in America from other provinces increased,except traditional Cantonese.Although American Chinese from Guangdong province still occupied a leading position,they cannot be regarded as the only significant overseas groups.In addition,with the emergence of new overseas Chinese communities,traditional overseas Cantonese groups are no longer sole in Chinatown.Confronted with the change,those traditional Cantonese groups have changed in the aspects of its external form,the aim and the service in order to survive.Traditional overseas Cantonese groups could conform to the change of times,so they could remain its status in the society of Chinese American and overseas Chinese,even develop and play an irreplaceable role in terms of some functions.
