| Before World War ?,Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia held an absolute leadership position in the local Cantonese community.They had played an important role in maintaining the stability of overseas Chinese society,disseminating Chinese culture and enhancing the cohesion of overseas Chinese.Since the end of World War ?,although Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia have lost their pre-war dominating positions in local Chinese societies due to the changes of political identity of overseas Chinese and the changes in the local social environment,it is not as some scholars believe,that is,members of overseas Cantonese associations are aging,no new blood are introduced,and they cannot follow the steps of the times.Undeniably,some of the Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia have not made changes in time to face the new social environment,and they have gradually been engulfed by the tide of history.However,in order to renew the functions of the associations,most Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia have revised their articles of association,adjusted their organizational structure,and seized the opportunity in time during the period of post-war.By expanding the economic base of the community,changing its concept of development,and turning from passive to active service to the public and promoting the social development of the host country,many Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia have provided another kind of spiritual destination for the local overseas Chinese,and built a bridge among the local society,the overseas Chinese and the origin country of the overseas Chinese,continuing the network of the local overseas Chinese and their ancestral country.Thus Cantonese community organizations in Singapore and Malaysia have still had an irreplaceable position in the local society of overseas Chinese since World War ?. |
