"New curriculum standard for primary school English" (2011 Edition) pointed out that the focus of the English curriculum reform was to change the situation that most of the teachers paid too much attention to English grammar and vocabulary in the past. At the same time, it stressed that teachers should tend to develop students' comprehensive ability of language from the students' cognitive level, personality characteristics, life experience and interest in learning. Meanwhile,the task of English course in basic education was to stimulate and cultivate students' interest in learning English and made the students master some basic knowledge of English and English skills, above all, it placed the students listening and speaking skills in a prominent position.Therefore, according to the requirements of the new curriculum, the English teachers of elementary school across the country began to explore an efficient and flexible teaching way. After initial teaching practice and research, the author found that the short play is an effective way to meet New Curriculum requirements.On one hand, the short play refers to a play which the teacher adapt various materials, such as some conversations, text, the fairy tale story and so on into the short play. On the other hand, the students can rearrange the short play by themselves with their imagination. Later, the students perform the short play in the form of group, and then evaluate the teachers and students. This new type of teaching is a powerful supplement to the traditional teaching methods, it should be highly concerned by the English teaching profession and give a deeper research, to fill the gap that only focus on theoretical research, but lack of empirical research.In this study, The author found four classes of fourth grade of Inner Mongolia Shengle experiment primary school as experimental subjects. Firstly, the author use the method of questionnaire survey, interview and classroom observation to investigate and study the application of short play in the classroom of the primary school. At the same time, to use the SPSS statistical software for the data statistics and then based on statistical results, the author tend to analyze the application of short play in the primary school classroom comprehensively. Secondly, to confirm whether can change the current debility situation by the teaching way of the short play. Thirdly, to understand the actual effect of short play in English Teaching in primary school and find the difficulties that the teachers and the students met in the course of rehearsing the short play. Above all, it can provide some reference data for future teachers in the use of short play teaching.This study intends to answer the following three questions:(1) Whether the use of short play can improve students'listening and speaking?(2) Whether the use of short play can improve students'interest in English learning and the enthusiasm of learning?(3) Whether the use of short play can cultivate students' team spirit and the ability of cross-cultural communication?The results showed that students'speaking and listening level has been significantly improved in the experimental class after using the teaching way of the short play. Especially in the aspects such as voice, tone and language fluency has made greater progress than natural class. To be mentioned, most of the students in the experimental class have a significant improvement in learning English interest, teamwork spirit, intercultural communication competence and so on.At the end of the article, the author gives effective solutions and recommendations according to some of the problems encountered in the study. And the author found that the application of the short play must be in the teachers' reasonable arrangement of time, the correct guidance of the students, and to give a positive evaluation and so on. Only in this way can achieve the expected teaching goal. Through the empirical research, the author have a preliminary understanding to the short play, which can help to research the problems related to the field of English teaching widely and deeply.
