Reading is the main source of getting information. As an important language input, it has strong influences on other skills like listening, speaking and writing. English reading as a vital part of English teaching, not only needs to make students master language points and get information, but also needs to make students grasp some reading strategies and cultivate their comprehensive ability. However, the current situation of English reading is not satisfactory. Many students pay much attention to details and ignore the whole structure of the passage. After reading, they can’t grasp the main idea and passage structure. These problems seriously affect their reading interest and confidence, restricting the improvement of their reading ability. Therefore,it is urgent to explore a new teaching model to guide them to read effectively.Mind mapping is a visual tool for knowledge and thinking process, which can help the construction of individual knowledge network. The interactive teaching approach emphasizes the importance of students, advocates active class interaction in teaching activities and aims to cultivate students’ communicative competence. The researches on the application of mind mapping in English teaching is not thorough. And the application ofmind mapping to interactive teaching method in reading instruction for senior high school students has not been done before. Therefore, based on schema theory and constructivism theory, the author applies mind mapping to interactive teaching to form a new teaching model——the mind-mapping-based interactive teaching model and put it into practice, trying to make mind mapping an effective interactive tool and promote class active interaction, so as to improve students’ reading interest and proficiency. The research aims to answer the following questions:(1)whether mind-mapping-based interactive teaching model can improve students’ reading proficiency;(2)whether mind-mapping-based interactive teaching model can arouse students’ reading interest;(3)whether mind mapping can be used as an interactive tool to promote class interaction. The research is conducted in Affiliated Middle School to Inner Mongolia Normal University, lasting for a semester. The subjects with a total number of 80 students are chosen from two parallel classes: Class 7, Grade 2 and Class 13, Grade 2. And the experimental class is Class 7, Grade 2, and Class 13, Grade 2 is the control class. Each class has 40 students. Students in experimental class are taught in mind-mapping-based interactive teaching model in reading class, while the control class is taught with traditional method(the explanation of language points and grammar). The researcher adopts reading comprehension tests, classroom observation and interview to collect data with quantitative and qualitative analysis. According to the independent sample T-tests withSPSS17.0, there are significant differences in reading proficiency in EC and CC after the experiment. So the teaching model is effective. It is found in research that mind-mapping-based interactive teaching model can improve students’ reading competence by arousing their reading interest, promoting their active class interaction and comprehending the text as a whole. Moreover, mind mapping can be used as an effective interactive tool, promoting students’ meaningful construction of knowledge structure.
