In the process of students English learning, one of the basic variables is their learning method, in which students' thinking modes can be reflected from the completion of their cognitive tasks. In students' learning grade, the learning methods play a pivotal and determining role. Some students' English learning foundation is weaker, while other students whose English is relatively better. Then what causes the differences between high achievers and low achievers. The research aims to make a comparative study to find out the differences in English learning methods, and then to provide some suggestions to implicate into daily learning life, helping students and teachers to improve English learning and teaching.Using the methods of questionnaire and interviews, the author has conducted a comparative study between high achievers and low achievers of three grades in Houma No.1 Middle School in order to find the students'differences mainly in grades and gender.From the data analysis, the author sums up the different reasons from three aspects of learning methods. In a general way, the research shows that the high achievers prefer to choose the autonomous learning method, while the low achievers often learn in the cooperative learning method. From the aspect of different grades, for the high achievers, students in Senior Grade One learn in the cooperative learning method, but those in Senior Grade Two and Three learn in the autonomous learning method. For the low achievers, in Senior Senior Grade One and Two, learn more often in the cooperative learning method, but when they are in Senior Grade Three they prefer to learn in the autonomous learning method. From the aspect of gender, the research shows that most schoolboys mainly learn in the situational learning method, while for schoolgirls, high achievers often learn in the autonomous learning method, and low achievers learn in the cooperative learning method.There are some suggestions about English teachers'teaching and students'learning: Teachers should adapt to the needs of every student. At the same time they need to pay attention to the individual differences of students; Teachers should enhance guidance of students learning methods and cultivate their autonomous learning ability; Meanwhile, teachers should establish an appropriate teaching situation, develop students' interest of English learning and create interactive learning platform, promoting the development of students' English communicative competence. For students, it is a key factor to adapt the learning methods and learn to use different methods in learning English life.
