The period, from 2001 to 2020, is a stage of rapid population aging in our country. It is the responsibility of the whole society to actively seek the effective ways to alleviate the pressure of the population aging. Research shows that physical exercise is increasingly highlight its health preservation value to improve people’s physical and mental health effectively. This study investigates retired staff’s physical health, cognitive characteristics of traditional sports regimen, behavior conditions and behavior influence factors and so on in some colleges and universities in Henan Province through literature method, survey method, mathematical method, etc. The study results provide references for further strengthening work in some area, popularizing sports regimen knowledge,improving the conditions and environment of retired staff in colleges and universities in Henan Province as well as better promoting elderly sports.The results show that: 86.8% of retired staff in colleges and universities in Henan Province have a correct understanding for the concept of health; and they have a relatively high degree of awareness to physical health characteristics and functions. In understanding sports regimen and its value to promote physical and mental health, there is no significant difference between different age groups and genders. However, there exists a significant difference between people with different education background(p < 0.05); that is the higher the education degree is, the better people can understand sports regimen and its value. Besides, it is not ideal to acquire sports regimen knowledge through attending professional courses, which indicates related sports regimen professional courses have not been paid much attention to. And main motivation of participating in regimen sports relatively is to prevent diseases and promote health.Retired staff in colleges and universities in Henan province tend to choose Tai Chi, Wu Qin Xi, Ba Duan Jin and other easily promoted sports regimen methods. 40.54% of them are more inclined to collective exercise with friends, and women prefer group exercise. Moreover, in the process of doing regimen sports, people lack professional guidance. Meanwhile, People who do exercise more than 3 times a week and for between 31 minutes and 60 minutes account for 69.88% and 50% respectively. And those choosing low-intensity and moderate-intensity exercise account for 78.77%. Statistics chi-square test shows that there are obvious differences at different ages(p < 0.05); it means that he older people are, the more they are likely to choose mild exercise.The higher the respondents recognize the value of sports regimen, more actively they participate in it. This result also suggests that people’s sports regimen awareness and their actions toward it are consistent.Based on the above analysis, it is recommend: strengthening the publicity, promotion and development of traditional sports regimen through multiple channels and improving the public’s cognition of it and master of relevant knowledge in order to better participation. Furthermore, it is also advisable to actively organize and improve sports regimen activities for retired staff in colleges and universities in Henan Province, which will create an atmosphere of engaging in regimen sports. And also Sports Regimen Assembly should be organized as well so that it will arouse retired staff’s enthusiasm of engagement. In addition, it is also recommended to establish Retired Staff’s Sports Regimen Associations, cultivate professional instructors, build more stable venues and strengthen management and policy support. According to different characteristic of different regimen sports methods and groups, exercise methods could be adopted appropriately.
