With the development of the society, more and more people have realized the importance of oral English. However, the focus of the traditional English teaching is always on reading and writing aspects. The ability of listening and speaking is ignored. Most students' oral English levels need to be improved. This is usually called ‘the mute English phenomenon'. In order to solve this problem, the author tries to apply the situational teaching method in oral English teaching to improve students' oral English levels. The situational teaching method was proposed by British linguists in the 1930 s and systematically developed in the 1970 s. In 1979,Li Jilin firstly applied this teaching method to teaching Chinese. According to the requirement of teaching content, the teacher improves the teaching efficiency by organizing a series of colorful classroom activities to create a real or half real situation to stimulate students' emotion and interest in learning.Based on the theory of Krashen's input hypothesis, the author tries to apply the situational teaching method in senior high school oral English teaching. It aims to explore the effectiveness of the situational teaching method on improving student's oral English levels. Two research questions were put forward by the author before the experiment:1. What is the influence of the situational teaching method on senior high school students' oral English learning attitudes and levels?2. What are the effective ways provided by the situational teaching method? The author carries out a teaching experiment in NO.10 Senior High School of Kaifeng from September 2015 to January 2016. It lasted for four months. Students in two parallel classes take part in the teaching experiment. Class 3 of Grade 1 is the controlled class; Class 4 of Grade 1 is the experimental class. A total of 78 students have participated in this teaching experiment. During the teaching process, the teacher applies the traditional teaching method in the controlled class and the situational teaching method in the experimental class. All the students have the same learning materials and speed. The instrument includes two questionnaires, a pre-test, a post-test and an interview. In order to know the influence of the situational teaching method on senior high school students' oral English learning attitudes, the questionnaires are carried out. In order to know the influence of the situational teaching method on senior high school students' oral English learning levels, the tests are conducted. The author uses the SPSS data analysis software to analyze results of two tests scientifically. In order to know effective ways provided by situational teaching method, the interview is used. The results show that the situational teaching method can exert positive effect on the attitudes of high school students and improve students' oral English levels obviously. Interview, role playing and debate are the effective ways provided by the situational teaching method. The experiment shows that the situational teaching method is effective in senior high school oral English teaching. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, research methods, research problems, purpose and significance. The second chapter is the literature review. The author summarizes the previous research both at home and abroad. The third chapter introduces the related concept in detail and gives the theoretical foundation of the situational teaching method: Krashen's input hypothesis theory. The fourth chapter presents the experimental scheme. The fifth chapter is the results and data analysis. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, mainly including the summary of results and the analysis of shortcomings. Then the author gives some specific suggestions of applying the situational teaching method to oral English teaching in the further study.
