With the implementation of the new curricula, extensive reading has been playing a significant role in Chinese teaching.Through case study, literature review and in-depth interview, this paper is intended to address this issue. To begin with, the author makes an analysis on the necessity and importance of extensive reading.Following this, typical cases are put forward to illustrate the exsiting problems associated with the implementation of extensive reading, namely, lack of relevance to the syllabus and teaching objectives, being divorced from reality and ignorance of language form.In addition,an insight into the reasons of the three phenomena including the “unchinese” design of syllabus, insufficient knowledge about extensive reading from teaching perspective and lack of competence in students' performances is then given. To solve these problems mentioned above, the author makes an exploration in chapter 3,which consists four parts.Firstly, language is always the core of Chinese extensive reading.Secondly, teaching plans of extensive reading should be made combining “tool”,“humanity” and “surplus value”.Thirdly,it should conform to the law of mental development of the students.Fourthly,a scientific assessment system should be established in the implementation of extensive reading in Chinese teaching.
