Some researches show that there has been a decline over the last three decades in some key indices of adolescent physical quality. The decline has aroused societal concerns and national emphasis. In 2007, the Chinese Central Committee issued the#7 Document, stating, "a sports test in middle schools will be fully introduced for graduation and high-school admissions, and a sports test included in high schools for graduation and college admission purposes. " In 2014, the Ministry of Education issued three documents concerning "methods of assessment for student physical health", and this has helped, by policy, to protect student physical health from further decline. This paper examines the effects of the sports test on student physical quality in Jiangsu Province, and by using such methods as literature review, data analysis, a questionnaire survey and field observations, performs an analysis of three datasets:(1) the sports test plans of 13 cities in Jiangsu Province, (2) the physical health monitoring data of middle school students, aged between 12 and 14, and (3) the effects of the sports test on student and teacher behavior.Findings include:(1) The sports test promoted student physical fitness in Jiangsu Province with obvious effects; (2) The test was highly correlated to physical fitness scores in students; (3) In terms of the structure of the test, the "on-the-spot" effects were more discernible than the "on-the-spot plus process" effects; (4) Overall, the sports test was emphasized in schools, but further pedagogical adjustments are required; (5) To some extent the test is conducive to student sports behavior.Suggestions for further research:(1)To add a theoretical-knowledge component to the test and to raise health awareness in students; (2) To optimize the structure of the test and the guiding effects of the PE curriculum in middle schools; (3) To improve the awareness on the part of parents that physical exercise should not be merely utilitarian; (4) The incentive effects of the test should be magnified, and the physical exercise normalized in middle school students.
