Abstract/Summary:
Parent-Offspring conflict, also called "generation gap" is one of expressions of intergenerational relationships. It means the difference of values, thinking and life attitudes of people from two generations.Specifically,it refers to the difference of parents and children.Parent-Offspring Conflict about mate selection refers to the difference of mate choice, the way of mate selection and preference for mate selection.Due to different evolutional pressure they are facing, parents and children confront more intergenerational conflict.Under the instruction of evolution theory, based on the Inclusive Fitness Theory,Parental Investment Theory, genetic theory of selfish and kin altruism, the dissertation studies intergenerational conflict of preference of mate selection.Study 1 aimed to examine conflict of parents and children of different genders. Results supported the hypothesis:parents prefer source standard, especially when mothers select mate for daughters.Children prefer genetic preferences, daughters are more obvious than sons.Study 2 examine,in different mate selection scenarios,if parents and children insist their preference.the study combine genetic variables and resource variables. The results suggested:in the long-term mating strategies, when mothers select mates for daughters, they significantly prefer source factor, but daughters’ preference was not significant.it means daughters’ preference for genetic was weakened by resource when considering both factors.Sons significantly prefer genetic standard still, but fathers’ preference are not significant.comparing with sons, they prefer source standard.Study 3 aimed to examine the parent-offspring conflict of genetic preference, manipulating self-resembling faces as variables, without the effect of resource. The results suggested:in the long-term mating strategies, the difference of preference of faces that parents select for children were not significant. The preference of fathers for self-similar faces was marginally significant. When children select mates for themselves, they prefer faces that look like themselves.
