With the constant development of the elementary education curriculum reform,great changes have taken place in the fields of curriculum and teaching.Based on New English Curriculum Standard,the main objective of English course at elementary stage is to cultivate students' comprehensive language using ability.And the overall ability to use English is closely related to whole development of students' language knowledge,language skills,emotional attitude,leaning strategies and culture awareness.Under the influence of this theory,educators' understanding of the English classroom teaching and researches are also continuous deeply.English homework is one of the most frequent and important teaching technique requiring utmost attention at all levels of schools,which is regard as the stretch and essential part of classroom teaching,and it is not only an necessary factor to influence the English teaching but also an effective way to improve students' comprehensive ability of using language.English homework,however,as a necessary complement of classroom teaching,the reform in the field of homework is still lag behind other aspects of the curriculum reform.Therefore,it is significant to study the status quo and design of English homework for junior high school students.The main purpose of the study is to clarifythe reflection of the ideas of New Curriculum Reform in English homework and the current slackness of the English homework,then to enhance the positive effect of the homework to English teaching.On the base of the literature review on related researches and theories both at home and abroad of English homework,combining the practical situation of English teaching in our country,to make the survey and investigation on English homework status quo.Based on the New English Curriculum Standard,constructivism theory and humanism theory and by using the method of interviews and questionnaires,the study is to explore how to design effective English homework in junior high schools under the new curriculum standard.Then three research questions are put forward:(1)What is the status quo of English homework in junior high schools?(2)What is teachers and students' attitude toward English homework?(3)What aspects do teachers consider most when they design English homework?The major research findings are as follows:It is found that there have been few changes of English homework in junior school since this curriculum reform.Specifically,as to the current situation of English homework,the amount of English homework is a little large and the difficulty level is not high.The form and content of homework is singleness and far fromstudents' real life,which lead to function of homework has limitation.Most of the English teachers and students can give feedback on English homework timely,but modes of correcting are not various and students fail to participate in correcting their own homework regularly.The homework is assigning to students without considering students' individual difference.The function of English assignment on consolidating knowledge is obvious,while its role in cultivating the students' comprehensive competence of using language is not so evident.Generally speaking,nearly all the English teachers and most of the students have positive attitudes towards significance of English homework,but there are still a few students who are inclined to be negative to it because of the irrationality of current English homework.Both teachers and students hold negative attitude on cultivating comprehensive abilities of homework.Thirdly,when teachers design English homework,most of teachers are put more focus on language knowledge acquisition,but not the cultivating of comprehensive language ability.In order to make English homework helpful in realizing the five comprehensive developmental aims,the author puts forward some suggestions on designing English homework for English teachers.
