In the educational field at home and abroad, students'homework problems are of great concern. Quite a number of overseas studies have shown that homework not only has a positive significance in helping teachers understand the teaching situation in class and adjust teaching methods to improve teaching effects, but also plays an important role in improving students'achievement and developing students'self-discipline and responsibility. Many domestic scholars and school teachers also show positive attitude to the function of homework, thinking that homework has a positive impact on improving teachers'teaching and promoting students'academic progress. However, while the new curriculum reform was held sensationally, students'homework problems were not paid enough attention. The designing and marking of homework is still conservative and hesitant, which not only seriously affects a number of positive features of homework to play, but makes homework expose some negative effects, such as increasing the learning burden of students, containing students creative thinking, causing their emotional weariness and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the research and exploration of homework problems.This thesis selects English homework in junior middle school as a starting point, involving the designing and marking issues of junior high school English homework. Firstly, the writer puts the research results on students'homework at home and abroad in order, from which sums up the advantages and disadvantages of previous studies to establish a foothold for the study. Then, the writer gives some theoretical interpretations to the designing and marking of homework from different angles, such as the general theories of effective teaching, assessment theories of modern education, the nature and purpose of English teaching and the new curriculum concept, and students'aged and psychological characteristics in secondary schools. The following are collecting some samples of junior high school English homework, and talking with teachers through online interviews to know the present status of junior high school English homework. From those the writer summarizes the problems and issues in designing and marking homework, and reflects on them. Finally, I will offer some suggestions and strategy guidance respectively to English teachers and educational administration and school leaders, linking a few homework designing cases.The main conclusions of the research are as below: There are lots of disadvantages in designing junior high schools'English homework, including unclear or too narrow purposes, the single main body, form and content in designing homework, the improper difficulty and lack of layering, and lack of rational planning for the quantity of homework; In commenting homework, the subject and the marking way are too single, using marking symbols is not enough humanity, the focus on marking is too narrow, comments on the homework lack of richness and relevance, homework corrected lacks of revising guidance and lacks of reflection on issues in it. In the end, I suggest school leaders try the flexible open homework management, and teachers make appropriate improvements as for the problems with designing and marking homework.
