As an important component of language output, writing not only embodies a person's integrated competence in language usage but also is a key means of communication. Also, high requirements are set for junior middle school students' writing competence in new curriculum standard. However, there are still numerous problems in English writing teaching in junior middle school. Many students find that they have difficulty thinking of the words, phrases, sentence patterns they learned when they write.Furthermore,we can see from the students' writings that there commonly exists the negative transfer of Chinese which attests the inadequacy of language input. In view of the present situation, the research intends to explore an effective way to improve junior students' writing proficiency.Recitation is a traditional learning method which is extensively practiced in the classroom teaching in our country. The research takes“GXMS 250 Core Sentences”,a school-based curriculum of Baotou Gaoxin No.1 Middle School,as recitation materials and mainly focuses on the relationship between the recitation of “250 Core Sentences” and the students' writing. As for research methodology, both qualitative and quantitative research methods are adopted. The 16-week research, which involves 87 students in Junior Grade 2 from Baotou Gaoxin No.1 Middle School,is carried out to answer the research questions:(1)can recitation input help junior middle school students to reduce the negative transfer of Chinese in English writing?(2)can recitation help junior middle school students to improve their writing competence? The result demonstrates that recitation input can help junior middle school students to learn and memorize formulaic language, reduce the negative transfer of Chinese in writing so that it can help them improvewriting competence.Furthermore,we can see from the result analysis of the interview that many students hold a positive attitude towards recitation and are willing to take recitation as a learning method to improve writing in their further study. The thesis is composed of five parts.Chapter one introduces the background information of the research and states the significance of the research.Chapter two reviews the relevant literature and sets the theoretical basis for the research. The hypothesis that recitation can help to improve students' writing competence is confirmed from theoretical aspect.Chapter three presents the research methodology. In chapter four, the results of the experiment are shown and analyzed using SPSS for in-depth discussion.Chapter five is to conclude the research findings and summarize the limitations of the research at the same time, based on which the suggestions are given to further study.
