The Logic Of Students' Right-defending Actions In The Campus Network Community

Nowadays,with the students' awareness of rights becoming more and more intense,students' rights and interests have been paid more and more attention.At the same time,students' rights activists had been carried out on the network platform frequently.Our research problem is,what is the logic of students' right-defending actions in the campus network community?We chose the N school X forum as our data collection point,and made a preliminary classification of students' right-defending actions in the X forum,which including three types:individual right-defending actions,group right-defending actions and the school-wide right-defending actions.Our research task is to reveal the unique logic in these three types of right-defending actions.Before doing the analysis,we first reviewed some related researches,including college BBS research,students rights and power,students rights protection and the researches on the network mass incidents.We found that these studies did not reveal the specific logic of students' activism,and didn't show their rights protection awareness and understanding of the rights on the network,let alone their specific rights' protection strategy.Next,in order to build our theoretical analysis framework,we reviewed the theory for reference,including Olson's theory of collective action,the reflections from other scholars,and W.Lance Bennett's theory of 'connectivity'.On the basis of comprehensive reflection on these theory,we construct a new theoretical framework.The framework includes two kinds of activism subjects-activists and negotiation object;The four elements of activism:the narrative of activism,the consciousness of activism,the goal of the actions and the responses.The specific logic is that,activists will use narrate to show their own rights protection strategy,and aims to use rights protection strategy to make the consciousness transformation-from the consciousness of the rights and interests of their own to the collective or entire recognition of the interests-to come true,which influence the realization of the target.Also,the response of the negotiation objects may also affect the consciousness of human rights defenders and even the entire activism,and eventually affect the defenders' goal.In addition,we mainly focus on one strategy of right-defending:"raise" strategy.For the logic of the individual activism,there are three main mechanisms:first,through the analysis of the X forum,we found that because of the differences on consciousness of the rights between different individuals,a person's activism is often difficult to get recognition.Secondly,we found that because individuals often use the damage to their own interests as the starting point,which is not associated with other people,so it is difficult to get the approval of others.At the same time,we found that although activists in these two mechanisms all use "raise" strategy,but the effect is not satisfying.Finally,we found that the key point of the "raise" strategy is that activists will need to share their own vested interests,realize the transformation of their own interests consciousness to the group level.For example,individuals in "the network speed event" protested that the speed is too slow for everyone will miss the opportunity to interview instead of his own issue.This tends to make everyone concerned about the damage to the interests of individuals,thereby helping individual activists to achieve their own goals.For the group right-defending actions,through the comparison of two typical rights events:graduate student scholarship case and post-graduate national scholarship case,we found that the awareness of the group right is very important.Then,we described the influence of the rights-defending groups' characteristics,narrate,the characteristic of negotiation object to the rights consciousness,and pointed out that the differences between rights consciousness will affect the clarity of the goals of activism as well as the diversification of the rights protection means,which have a direct bearing on the achievement of targets.Finally,we summarize the success logic and difference Logic of group right-defending actions.For the logic of school-wide right-defending actions,We found that because the actions are initiated by all the students,therefore,even if the direct damage to the interests has not yet appeared,the 'early elevated' situation will also appear.students will appeal to a higher level of awareness of rights to restrict the school authority.However,although the high level of awareness of rights will bring widely involve in the activism,the "free rider phenomenon" is very serious,the entire operation could be easily leaded to the failure.Also,when a direct damage to the interests of the students appear,the emotional factors in the awareness will erupt,which allows them to focus only on immediate interests,ignoring to solve the fundamental problems in the system,this is plight of the school-wide right-defending actions.
