The Ethnic-construction Of Taiwan's Aborigines:A Systematic Analysis And Discussion To The Discourse And Practices Of "Mountainous Compatriots" By Kuomintang During 1947-1994

Taiwan's aborigines(or Taiwanese original inhabitants)is one part of the Chinese nation.It is also one of the important elements of so-called "multi-ethnic pluralistic society" in Taiwan.As an ethnic group located in "Chinese peripheries",there are many differences between Taiwan's aborigines and Han people,such as in physiological feature,traditional culture,native ethnic language and so on.Although Taiwan's aborigines are the earliest residents in Taiwan island,the name of those people is never fixed in Taiwan's more than 400 years exploration and development history:in the Ming and Qing dynasties,the people is known as "barbarian"("?");in the period of Japanese occupation,the people is known as "Takasago"(" ???");when Taiwan area is under the martial law,the people is known as "mountainous compatriots"(" ????").Until the last 20 years,the Taiwan authorities rectified its official name to "Taiwan's aborigines".Behind the changing of the names of them it actually reflects the distinct political orientation and arrangements to Taiwan's aborigines in different governments.Today,The cross-strait relation is rising tensions,and DPP administration take full advantage of the aborigines' ethnicity to sabotage national unity of China.Why DPP can resort to "transitional justice" to manipulate the ethnic identity of the aborigines?In fact the reason is originated from the Kuomintang administration can not complete Taiwan society's "national integration" before 1990s:It is failure to amalgamate this ethnic group to other people in Taiwan area authentically.Therefore,this research systematically described and examined this historical process:Taiwan's aborigines were constructed as "mountainous compatriots" which lack of ethnic identity by Kuomintang under authoritarianism.Through the theoretical perspective of nationalism research and ethnic construction,I want to analysis why and how did Kuomintang make Taiwan's aborigines to be so-called "mountainous compatriots".The main contents of this thesis are reflected in four aspects.First.I use the classical studies and theories of nationalism and ethnic identity as a guide,discuss the implication and interaction between "nation" and "ethnic group" in academic level.Hence I find the discourse of "mountainous compatriots" actually belong to the venation of nation-building that "homogeneization of Chinese nation " leading by Kuomintang.Second,I backtracked the historical roots of the Kuomintang regime's nationalism ideology.I find because of the Han chauvinism long-standing in the party's ideological basis,it is impossible to Kuomintang that take a positive attitude to recognize the ethnic identity of Taiwan's aborigines.Ergo,Kuomintang take the people as "mountainous compatriots",an obscure location in national political space.In addition,Kuomintang also reconstruct the history about Taiwan's aborigines,and then initially established the discourse of "mountainous compatriots" with a strong color of ethnic discrimination.Third,I comprehensive reviewed its concrete practices of the discourse of "mountainous compatriots",that is how did Kuomintang substantialized the "mountainous compatriots":the authorities set up the so-called"mountainous administration".Rely on its modern and efficient bureaucracy and executive technology,Kuomintang totally assimilated Taiwan's aborigines in the field of politics,culture and economy,ultimately destructed the traditional society of the aborigines,and established direct governing over them through the party-state system.fourth,I analyzed the intrinsic falsity and its historical influence of the construction of"mountainous compatriots":out of the high-sounding propaganda at authoritative discourse and rhetoric,Kuomintang still took Taiwan's aborigines as "the other" in daily practice field.Therefore,the construction of "mountainous compatriots" not only bring equality to the aborigines,even aggravated its problems of marginalization and stigmatization in the mainstream society of Taiwan.However,when this construction eventually collapsed at 1990S in the wake of Taiwan 's political transformation,the rising ethnic consciousness of Taiwan's aborigines is stuck in the manipulation of the "Taiwan independence" forces.For this reason,although Taiwan's aborigines escape from the construction of "mountainous compatriots" by Kuomintang administration,tragically into another trap:the construction of "Taiwan nation" by DPP administration.
