The importance of middle school students' English listening comprehension has been widely acknowledged,so how to effectively improve the English listening ability of the students in senior high schools in rural areas has been a topic concerned by many researchers and English teachers.Because in learning English language,students not only get information through reading,but also can get more efficient and important language input through voice.Besides improving students' language ability,to foster the autonomous listening learning strategies of the students is also an important part of listening teaching.As a matter of fact,English learners in rural areas are dependent on the teacher's teaching in the classroom so much that it is difficult for them to achieve a qualitative leap through the accumulation of the limited listening activities or exercises in the classroom.To improve the rural senior high school students' listening level,we must help them to be responsible for their listening learning process,make out the learning objectives,and learn to use appropriate listening strategies to achieve specific objectives and to develop their ability of self-control and self-discipline.So learning about the listening learning must be an interactive dynamic process of continuous interaction of learners themselves,teachers,learning tasks and the teaching environment.In recent years the action research developing in practice is aimed at the present problems.Its development follows the new teaching model of doing fully self-reflection.Its purposes are to solve the problem of inconsistency between the research field and the practice and to provide a good model for us to carry out the English listening learning and research.At the same time,the action research has been becoming a research method for people in education field at home and abroad to combine the theoretical research with their practical experience efficiently.The action research chooses the students from a natural class of grade one in a senior high school in Linzhou as research objects.At first the author investigates the students' autonomous listening learning situation by delivering a questionnaire among the research objects,and then gradually improves the students' autonomous listening learning ability through two rounds of action research.The research also finds that the training of students' listening strategies can help them become more autonomous language learners besides the effective guidance of teachers.Based on the test and interviews,this paper points out that students' autonomous listening learning ability is directly related to their listening achievement.
