In the English learning process,there is a saying “ if you get a high reading comprehension score in college entrance English examination,you will achieve a high English score in it”.That is to say,reading plays an indispensable part in English examination.Strong reading ability means strong language ability.Students have to pay much attention to English reading.Improving students' reading ability has become a vital issue for English teaching.Teachers in senior high school concentrate much on students' reading teaching.However,in actual reading teaching,teachers adapt the same teaching method for all students,ignoring the individual differences of the students.Teachers merely take the students' average reading ability into account when they assign the teaching aims,tasks and homework.To solve the problem,Stratified Teaching Method can be adopted for students of different levels.As a newly-developed teaching approach,it brought completely a new concept and an approach into language teaching classes.This method is based on Proximal Development Zone Theory and Optimization of Teaching Process Theory.New English curriculum demands that teaching methods should be optimized and the function of communication be emphasized.Stratified Teaching Method is based on the differences of students.In the process of teaching and learning,it helps to fully mobilize students' ability.Therefore,it is significant to apply Stratified Teaching Method to reading teaching.This thesis will study whether Stratified Teaching Method can arouse high school students' interest in learning reading and whether it can improve their ability to learn reading.From September 2016 to January 2017,this experiment is conducted in New Century High School in Huanghua of Hebei Province,with two parallel level classes(the students are at the same age,more importantly,their gender proportion is also similar)in Grade Ten as research subjects: Class A and Class B(60 from Class A,60 from Class B).Class A and Class B were the experimental class(EC)and the control class(CC)respectively.Stratified Teaching Method was used in EC and thetraditional reading teaching mode was used in CC.Comparing the students' grades of pre-test,the author found that there was little difference between the two classes.After four months of experiment,a post test was conducted in EC and CC to find out the effect of Stratified Teaching Method.The reading materials in the test were designed by authorities.Then the author compared and analyzed the data with SPSS13.0.A questionnaire and an interview were also used to study whether students' learning interest and learning ability were aroused by Stratified Teaching Method.The research result proves that the interest of students at different levels in learning reading is aroused by Stratified Teaching Method.Meanwhile,Stratified Teaching Method also helps to improve different students' proficiency of English reading respectively.
