With the advance of economic globalization,people begin to pay much more attention to English education than before.The word frequency theory is now widely accepted and adopted by educators and scholars in the field of vocabulary teaching,as it suits to students' cognitive competence development.The theory has also been applied in the compilation of some recently edited English teaching materials.As an important part of English learning,vocabulary learning plays a decisive role in students' language learning process.The rationality of the vocabulary setting in a textbook is also an important factor which influences the teaching effects to a great extent in classroom application.The research purpose of this paper is to study on the vocabulary setting of O xford English junior high school textbooks(Shanghai edition)from the perspective of word frequency theory and students' cognitive development,so as to further analyze the rationality of vocabulary setting.The main part of the research is to process the vocabulary list in the corpus to find out the frequency of use of the words.By combining with the cognitive development theory,the author makes further analysis on the vocabulary setting from unit to unit,volume to volume,to see if it is helpful and instructive to students' language learning.After the results are obtained,the author makes some further discussions and analyses on the results from several different aspects.Some suggestions and opinions are put forward on the basis of teac hing material evaluation.The author also proposes some corresponding solutions to the problems discovered in the analysis of vocabulary setting.In terms of supplementary teaching materials,the author has given some complementary glossaries for reference,which aims to meet the developmental needs of students.Finally,the author summarizes the limitations of the research and some implications obtained during the research,proposing the prospect for future study.It is expected that the teaching material analysis in the future be further extended to senior high school textbooks,so as to make the researches an integrated system and create more referential and inspirational values.
