The paper presents the research on the vocabulary designs of the course bookOxford English7A published by Shanghai Education Press2008. It aims to discuss thefeatures of vocabulary designs of Oxford English, to give modifications on the currentvocabulary designs and to find out some implications for the future course bookcompiling in terms of vocabulary.First of all, the author records the vocabulary findings on vocabulary learningincluding vocabulary knowledge and integration of vocabulary and language skills.Meanwhile, the author illustrates literature reviews of vocabulary teaching includingprinciples of teaching vocabulary, the checklists of vocabulary components in coursebooks, types of exercises and activities for the vocabulary development. Next stage isthe survey of students and interviews with teachers. After collecting data, the authorpresents the features of vocabulary designs of Oxford English7A. Then, anexperiment is described to find out whether the modified version of course book isbetter for students in the vocabulary acquisition. Finally, suggestions andimplications are provided for future discussion.The author points out current problems and the gaps of vocabulary designs inOxford English7A. It is recommended to go further studies on textbook compilationsuch as layers of vocabulary knowledge, word list, function words, delexical verbs,more exquisite designs on activities and exercises, phonology use in the presentationof words and the application of word unit analysis.Due to lack of enough literatures, the study is still on the preliminary stage. Thepaper aims to give some enlightenment for experts and scholars to make outsystematic and theoretical results for the purpose of maximizing the utility of coursebooks.
