Vocabulary is the basic material of language, which is also the major undertaker of language expression and crucial foundation for the development of language skills. No wonder the famous linguist D.A. Willkins said,"Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed." Thus it can be seen that vocabulary plays an extremely important role in language learning. However, after many years of language teaching, the present author found out that teachers worked hard to teach vocabulary but with little effect. The students complain that it is most difficult to remember English words, and it is time-consuming and ineffective. The reasons are various. In recent years, in tune with the rapid development of the information age and the digital, audio-visual technology, multimedia technology and its application has also entered a new era of development in the people’s life, especially in the academic field.Until now, multimedia technology has been widely used in the foreign language teaching. Though most teachers and students consider that teaching via multimedia technology is an effective way in foreign language teaching, few relevant quantitative researches can be found to prove its effectiveness. This paper herein aims to construct a proper mode of English vocabulary teaching and learning for Grade nine students in secondary school. And by keeping track of, and making comparison between the two classes of Grade nine students in Qingshuiting middle school, where the present writer works, before, during, and after the experiment, the present writer verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the new mode.In this paper, the following research methods are adopted:Literature review, Questionnaire investigation, After-class interview, Data analysis, and Experiment. In order to compare the effects of the two teaching modes, we had vocabulary tests and learning interests researches. It is explicitly found that learning English vocabulary with multimedia technology has a much better effect than the inherent teaching mode.
