English reading is to learn language knowledge and effective ways to improve your English language ability,and it is also the principal means of access to external information.The New National Curriculum Standards emphasizes on the development of student's language skills,language knowledge,emotional attitude,learning strategies and cultural consciousness,and aims to train students to use English to obtain information,process information,develop problem analysis and solving skills.Students are required to have a wide range of interest in reading and good reading habits.However,very few students can meet the new standard requirements.The author observed during the teaching practicum that many high school students have some problems in their English reading due to bad reading habits or lack of reading strategies.In this survey,through questionnaire investigation and interview method,for the Dalian area of Liaoning province five high school students(Pu Landian No.2,Kai Faqu senior high school and Lv Shun No.3 schools.Chang Xing island of Jin Zhou senior high school)of the Status quo of English reading learning investigation and study.The aim is to understand the status quo of the senior high school students English reading in this area,to find the obstacles they exist in the reading and explore the reason,to improve their English reading ability.Thiscan provide the reference for a line of teacher education practice,relevant education researchers,and policymakers to make relevant policy.Survey results show that the status quo of high school students English reading is not optimistic;Many students have some bad reading habits;they lack or improperly use reading skills and strategies.And the main obstacle for their development of reading ability is the shortage of vocabulary and lack of the cultural background knowledge of the target language.It is hoped that the findings of this survey study can help us English teachers know better about the need of our students,and can meet their real needs in the teaching process and improve their reading ability more effectively.
