The promotion of the quality-oriented education and the curriculum reform requires that students should be not only concerned on the ability of communication,but also on the capability of language.Language learning cannot be separated with vocabulary.English learning is the same.As is known to all the foundation of English learning is vocabulary and vocabulary affects English learning directly,even the number of vocabulary.Memorizing vocabulary has gradually been an important problem for us.Unfortunately,for years,students are still memorizing words mechanically.It makes students feel that it is difficult for them to learn English well;even many of them are tired of learning English.Especially this phenomenon appears in the edge of town where education is not well developed.Most students are migrants there,and their parents have no time to take care of them.During the process of English learning,the students were eager for help to build their skills of vocabulary learning;also they failed to master the new words of their textbook.The phenomenon discouraged the enthusiasm and the intrinsic motivation of students.Cultivation of students' subjectivity and personality is neglected,too.Vocabulary teaching would become a totally new and important task for English teaching.A profound research of phonics study appeared in the US and Britain,which started from the 17th century.The native speakers are the main objects,especially for preschoolers.Nevertheless,based on the research on phonics study at home and abroad,this thesis has brought the forefront a focus on the application of phonics to junior middle school students'vocabulary teaching.The students' ability of pronunciation and spelling were better than before and they can learn the words faster.To prove the hypothesis of this,questionnaires and tests were used in this study.The author selected two classes of Grade Seven in a middle school for the children of migrant labourers and the CG acquires the traditional way to memorize vocabulary while the EG uses the phonics.After four months training,the progress and improvement of students' vocabulary learning are all enhanced.We can conclude that phonics has an effective influence on students' vocabulary learning.In addition,it is suggested that teacher can use phonics instruction to improve students'ability of English learning,promoting them more motivation and more confidence in learning English.Meanwhile,for further study,the author lists some phonics teaching approaches and samples for reference.
