Vocabulary acts as the foundation of acquiring a language,and nothing can be expressed in language without vocabulary.Vocabulary learning is an important part of English learning and students spend most of their time on it.However,the result is not satisfactory.Learning vocabulary is still a great obstacle for junior high school students.For the past few years,some scholars have raised that we could apply Mind Map to the English vocabulary teaching,so as to improve students' vocabulary memorizing efficiency and to reform middle school English teaching.The present study intends to apply Mind Map to English vocabulary teaching,which aims to study the effects the Mind Map have on vocabulary memorization,students' interest in learning English and on the students' English performance.The research mainly answers the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of junior high school students' English vocabulary memorization?(2)What is the effect of the application of Mind Map to English vocabulary teaching on vocabulary memorization and overall English performance?(3)What is the effect of the application of Mind Map on arousing the students' interest in English learning? The study adopts the method of experimental research.The subjects of this research come from Class Five and Class Six,two parallel classes with fifty students in each class,from eighth grade in Xinxiang No.10 Middle School.Class Five is experimental class,in which English vocabulary is taught with Mind Map,and Class Six is as control class and English vocabulary is taught with traditional teaching method.There is no significant difference of the English performance before implementing this research between the experimental class and the control class.This research lasts one semester from the beginning of September to the end of December in 2016.Some instruments,such as tests,questionnaire and interview,are employed to collect data and the findings are as follows.First,at present the model of teaching English vocabulary is monotonous,which only focuses on pronunciation and corresponding Chinese meaning.And students usually learn with rote memory,neglecting the structure of word.As a result,they forget words in short time.Second,the application of Mind Map to English vocabulary teaching can improve students' English vocabulary memorization and performance,and arouse their interests in learning English and cultivate their good habits in learning.The findings are of some value to English vocabulary teaching in junior high school.
