Language learning strategies is one of the most active fields in the second language acquisition.Nowadays,researchers have obtained abundant successful results about English learning strategies.However,the researches on the comparative analysis of English learning strategies of Ethnic Minority Students and Han students is still to be improved.In such background,this study carried out the similarities and differences between junior middle school Minkaomin Uyghur Students and Han students in learning strategies use.This research aims to help Han and Minkaomin Uyghur Students of junior middle school to make use of learning strategies effectively in their English learning process,and provide some suggestions on how to improve the future English teaching for minority areas of junior middle school.The present research carries out a survey of English learning strategies of 100 Grade Nine Han students and 100 Grade Nine Minkaomin Uyghur Students from Yining No.7 Junior Middle School.Cheng Xiaotang and Zheng Min's Strategy Inventory for English Learning was employed to investigate the pattern of English learning strategies used by 200 subjects.Data was analyzed by SPSS 17.0,and then obtained a better understanding of the issues presented this study by interviewing 4 Han students and 4 Minkaomin Uyghur students.The research findings are as follows: 1)Among the four categories of English learning strategies,Han students use affective strategies most frequently,followed by cognitive and communicative strategies.The frequency of meta-cognitive strategies is the lowest.2)Among the four categories of English learning strategies,Minkaomin Uyghur Students use cognitive strategies most frequently,followed by affective,communicative and meta-cognitive strategies and these three strategies at the medium level.And the mean of meta-cognitive is the lowest,which is 3.23.3)Compared the data on the use of the English learning strategies by Minkaomin Uyghur Students and Han students,it can be found that there are some differences even though the much common ground shared by both(Han students and Minkaomin Uyghur Students using frequency of meta-cognitive strategies and communicative strategies both belong to the medium level).The findings show that Minkaomin Uyghur Students use cognitive strategy in higher frequency than the Han students.Affective strategies employed by Han students are higher than that of Minkaomin Uyghur Students.Through the analysis of the data and results in this study,the author discusses the similarities and differences in English learning strategies use between Han students and Minkaomin Uyghur Students.Then based on the research findings,the author concluded following suggestions:Firstly,English teachers should include learning strategies in their teaching plans.Secondly,when the teachers focus on the strategies teaching,they can start the lesson with somestrategies which students have already known.Thirdly,based on encouraging them,teachers should give students a clear evaluation.
