With the development of globalization and normalization, our country contactsmore and more closely with the world, Xinjiang, lies in a leapfrog developmentfrontier and important strategic status of west development,is faced with newopportunities and challenges. We should increasingly highlight the importance oflearning English, the minority students of Xinjiang should not only master the nativelanguage and the national common language, but also English. It is the requirementof the students’ further development in the future. And it will also meet the needs ofsocial progress and development. Actually, since the90s, some ethnic middle schoolprovided English course which is not listed in the teaching syllabus; After enteringthe21st century, English course accessed to many national common classes ofprimary and secondary schools. English teaching to minority students becomes moreand more popular. Based on this, research on the status of Xinjiang ethnic minoritystudents’ English learning is timely and necessary.The author studied the students in grade8of five Urumqi Uyghur minoritymiddle schools. The questionnaire survey to the actual situation of the students tolearn English combined with the other research methods such as observation andinterview. The result shows the minority middle school students’ English learningsituation in Urumqi city, Xinjiang, explains the learning characteristics, analyses theproblems, tries to seek solutions and countermeasures in order to provide usefulexperience for the development of minority language teaching in both Xinjiang inChina.The thesis consists of five parts:The first part is about the research background, research significance, and theresearch methods. It also defines the relevant concepts of research involving,launches the diffusion for the research.The second part is about the view of the three languages study abroad and threeethnic minority languages learning research in our country.The third part is about the students’ English learning situation investigation andthe analysis. By issuing a large amount of questionnaire, analysis of relevant data; Atthe same time combined with interviews, observation, such as more in-depth research,from the subjective factors in English study(including learning strategy, learningmotivation, learning interest, learning attitude) to the objective factors in Englishstudy(including teaching environment, teaching method, learning environment andlearning difficulty), such as the English learning situation of Uyghur minority junior high school students in Urumqi city.The fourth part is about the problems existing in the minority students’ Englishlearning. The author analyses the problems combined with the learning process,learning strategy, learning attitude, learning motivation, interest in English learning,classroom teaching and the classroom management.The fifth part provides the countermeasure and the suggestions to the Englishteaching for the minority junior high school.
