| With the continuous development of globalization,English as an international language has been playing an increasingly important role in the world.This is no doubt that oral English can’t be underestimated in modern society.The period of English education in junior middle school is a very important stage in China’s English education system.English teaching has made considerable progresses,and the students’ English level has been improved greatly.However,there are still various problems in oral English teaching which affect the development of students’ overall quality in language,and make oral English teaching lag behind.In this thesis,the author chooses 150 students and 40 English teachers in three junior middle schools in Yantai as the research participants to have a further investigation on the current situations and existing problems in oral English teaching in junior middle schools,and then puts forward some corresponding solutions.The main research instruments in the research are questionnaire,interview and classroom observation.The research questions of this thesis are as follows:(1)How do students and teachers value oral English teaching?(2)Can the teaching effects and students’ performances of oral English meet the requirements of the NECS in junior middle school?(3)What are the major problems of “oral English teaching” in junior middle school and the reasons of these problems?The study reaches the following conclusions:(1)In terms of their attitudes,time,teaching and learning methods and contents,both English teachers and students don’t pay enough attention to oral English,because oral English is not included in the testing system in junior middle school.(2)From the perspectives of the evaluation of the teachers and the students themselves and of the results of classroom observation,both the students’ performance and teaching effects can not satisfyingly meet the requirements of NECS.(3)According to the research,the problems in oral English in junior middle school are mainly reflected in the teachers’ and students’ attitude,time,teaching methods and learning contents.And the reasons for these problems mainly exist in the pressure of exam-oriented education system,the lack of authentic language environment and the insufficiency of educational infrastructure.According to the results of the research,the author puts forward some pertinent suggestions,such as spending more time on oral English teaching and learning appropriately,adopting teaching methods and teaching content rationally,including oral English in the testing system,and investing more in educational infrastructure,etc. |
