Because of test-oriented education and other limited conditions, oral Englishteaching has become a relatively weak link of English teaching in China, especially insome remote towns. Currently, the new English curriculum standards have put forwardhigher requirement for oral English skills, so it is worth our attention and inquiry onhow to cultivate the students’ oral English skills.Based on the current situation of English teaching in junior middle schools, thisthesis, according to the goal and requirements for English song teaching in the newcurriculum standards, aims to apply English songs to oral English teaching in order toimprove students’ oral English level and cultivate their interests. Some catchy Englishsongs with cheerful rhythm and plain language are good learning materials. Teachersshould make the fullest use of these songs, which can help students improve theirpronunciation, intonation, and stimulate their English learning motivation. These songsalso can be used to adjust the classroom atmosphere to promote English teaching.This thesis, by means of a teaching experiment, attempts to use English songs toteach spoken English in a junior middle school. The experiment was designed to answerthree main questions:(1) Can English songs arouse the students’ interest in learningEnglish?(2) Can English songs improve students’ oral English Ability?(3) What canteachers do to effectively apply the English songs to oral English teaching in junior highschools?This thesis chose a regular class in grade two from Wuxia Middle School as theexperimental object. In this experiment, several English songs were selected as a part ofthe teaching, and a variety of activities was designed according to these English songsso as to consolidate and strengthen what students had learnt. Within nearly three months,the experiment adopted a pretest, a posttest and two questionnaires. Finally, the test dataand the results from the pretest, the posttest and the two questionnaires were discussedin this thesis.On the basis of the results, it is proved that English songs can arouse students’ interest in learning English and improve their oral English Ability. Moreover, teachersshould effectively apply the proper English songs to oral English teaching. Therefore,English songs should be used to assist teaching, improve students’ oral English level,and its strong practicality deserves teachers’ attention and trying.
