There's no doubt that textbook plays an important role in English teaching.The language materials provided by the textbook include listening materials,reading materials,writing materials.Reading materials are a crucial component of textbook.By learning reading materials,the students can not only acquire knowledge but also practice reading skills.Therefore,the selection,design,analysis and evaluation of reading materials in the textbook directly influence students' reading efficiency.Under the trend of new curriculum standard,the researcher chooses two representative English textbooks: New Senior English For China(PEP version)and New Standard English(FLTRP version)for Senior One Students.The evaluation of this thesis is based upon the General High English Curriculum Standards(the experimental version).Hereinafter referred to as curriculum standards.The thesis adopts internal and external evaluation method which is proposed by Cheng Xiaotang.The framework of internal evaluation is based on Cunningsworth's analysis of reading text.It mainly discusses the similarities and differences on the genre,topics,length and language features;and it points out which textbook can help students to achieve the objectives for reading skills set in General High School Curriculum Standards.The external evaluation,which aims to investigate the acceptance of teachers and students,adopts a way of questionnaire survey.The results show that,to some extent,the reading materials in two textbooks comply with the English Curriculum Standard for reading objectives.In terms of genre,the reading materials in NSEC are more various.As for topics,two textbooks are also diverse.As for length,the reading quantity of materials in NSE is more than NSEC.In terms of language features,the materials in two textbooks well present the vocabulary which required in the General High School Curriculum Standards.The proportion of core vocabulary in NSE is relatively larger than that in NSEC,while the proportion of non-core vocabulary in NSEC is larger than that in NSE.The sentences in the texts are varied in complexity in NSEC.It is hoped that this research can behelpful to develop and design of the reading materials for senior(especially senior one)English reading instruction.
