Esthetic education, as an indispensable part of quality education, plays an important role in fostering students' interest, imagination, creativity as well as healthy personality. Senior English textbook, especially the reading materials are full of esthetic resources. Digging into these esthetic resources can effectively arousing students' interest in English learning, cultivating their healthy emotions, positive attitudes and values, eventually promoting the students' all-round development. However, esthetic education is absent in the present English teaching in senior high school. The absence of esthetic education turns the English teaching, which should be full of passion, beauty and joy, into a very dull and boring activity. Such English teaching is bound to fail. Based on such teaching situation, this thesis started from explaining the important role of esthetic education in English teaching, then makes a detailed analysis of the esthetic materials in the reading materials of senior English textbook. Next, we analyzed the result of the investigation, which aims to find out the problems existing in digging into the esthetic resources in current English teaching. Finally, we put forward several suggestions in order to help the teachers improve the esthetic education in English teaching. This study will play a positive role in reforming teachers' teaching ideas, teaching methods, improving teaching quality and carrying out the ideas of the new round of curriculum reform.
